So the good ol local airforce base was getting rid of a few fiber switch setups last year and gave them to my schools tech lab. Thier nice and all catalyst 5500. But I dont know what I am doing and niether does anyone in the school, all I have figured out to do is name ports and basic ccna router commands. Can anyone help me out here on how I set it up so my ethernet back bone can have pings?

I'm not sure where to point. But I'm going to go with suggesting checking Ciscos site and see if you can get a setup guide for them or some sort. I might try and get the chance to find you some resources if you've not already done so.
Sorry for the late reply!

Although, if you were to send them to me I'm sure I could get them working!

Let me know what you wanna do and I'll help you out. I'm working at an all cisco shop these days ;). I take it you just want it to be a generic ethernet switch or do you want it to actually do a routing functionality? VLANs? (Doubtful however at a LAN Party)...DHCP Server (you can even say different ports get different ranges of addresses)....

Just give me some idea of what you want to happen and we'll get it happening my friend!

If you should ever be in need of a drop-in replacement for any Cisco routing equipment, make sure you check out Vyatta: http://www.vyatta.org/

Looks very nice and the price is competitive, too. ;)

I've played with their software side stuff, it's pretty nice, but it's infuriating that they don't take abbreviated commands like sh for show

yeah, I'm thinking about emailing the teacher and asking him if he still has them. I don't see the high school using two cases of fiber setups unless they expand majorly, and for their portable classrooms they have them on a wireless router and hard wired between. They are a premanufactured trailers.

yeah, schools now are just like facepalm. I remember taking a test because I missed it from being in jail and I remember hearing some people bitch about budgeting but that was college. Public schools are pathetic really IDK if its cause they do s***** like hire a political science major to teach economics.
